rick valicenti has sold his remaining stake in thirstype to principal member chester, making chester the new primary holder of thirstype. rick will continue to be a contributor to the foundry, and will also focus on thirst as a whole.
congratulations to chester. i welcome my new canadian overlord.
welcome to little chloe hui ming ma, who was born on march 22, 2004. chloe is the first child to my close friends anthony and julie ma.

is adorable, no?
su and i have been named (i puff out my chest in pride at this) official gay uncles. chloe will join my nephew kobalt in our stable of children for whom we have no real fiscal respnsibility.
rick poynor, everyone’s favorite design cheerleader (gimme an S! gimme a U! gimme a C! gimme a K! where’s that go? your discourse sucks! it sucks, it sucks, it sucks!”) posts an interesting article at design observer in which adrian shaughnessy looks at the difference between the two cultures of design: those who make money, and those those who evangelize by creating spectacular design with not a lot of financial reward.
there’s a third strata of design culture that’s ignored, however, and that’s where studios like emigre, thirst, designers’ republic, and me company fall. or, at least, used to fall. not so sure about that any more. these are designers who take brave new ideas to market and fight for beauty in commerce. they’re the ones who make it work.
in looking at these two extremes of design practice, i think the author gets closer to some of the questions raised in emigre’s rant. maybe. i gotta think about it some more before i shoot off my mouth again.
please let this phone be released in the united states sometime soon so that i may faint dead away in a fit of delighted consumer screams.
amen.
if your teeth grind as hard as mine do at the very notion of having a home just like everyone else’s (i.e. looks like it was assembled from the corpse of an exploded home depot), please direct your attention to rejuvenation. the company makes faithful reproductions of (primarily) lighting fixtures from the high points of twentieth century design.
in my further attempts to assist chicago’s burgeoning metrosexual population in becoming ever more faggotty, it occurred to me that music’s been totally left out of the equation. exfoliant? check. hair product? check. moisturizer? check. tunes? non. quelle drague.
so to answer that, here’s my current favorite playlist. this, my boys, is what a girly man listens to. commodify me, fucko.

max medina is a wonderful designer. but more than that, he is a librarian elegant beyond words. his personal site contains one of the most complete catalogues from 4AD records i’ve ever seen.
Mac OS X’s best little chat application, proteus, is in release for version 4. it rocks. go buy. proteus is, to date, the only chat app i’ve found which adequately serves my purposes (i.e. i’m a chatty cathy who has accounts on four services and needs to have them all online and collected in a single window. and have i mentioned the phone i have surgically implanted on my ear?)
version 4 is currently a beta, but i’ve had no problems whatsoever on my quicksilver dual 1 gig g4 running panther. also coexists peacefully with all my unsanity haxies (also a must-have). now go talk to someone.
i am so making out with gideon yago.
i love it when one of my babies hits the new york times. rock on, miss ana marie.
fun fact: we illustrated the wonkette kitty to look like ana marie’s own tubby cat. it’s the magic of art direction!
